Chandigarh Corporation issues 45 challans of Rs 10,000 each for littering

CHANDIGARH: Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (CMC) starts a drive against littering and plastic use in the city. According to sanitation wing of the civic body, on the first day of the drive CMC issued 45 challans of Rs 10,000 each for littering. On the other hand, 40 other challans of Rs 5,000 each were issued for using plastic.

CMC staff was also instructed by the civic officials to spread awareness among citizens about the challan amount if they litter in city. The civic officials said, “Our aim is not to earn any revenue but to make people aware that they should not litter or stash garbage. People should understand the intention behind the challan drive.”

Sanitary Inspectors issued challans to most of the owners of restaurant and roadside eating stalls. They also clicked photos of stashing waste outside restaurants and eating stalls for the proof before issuing challans.

Amrit Pal Singh, Medical Officer of Health,  said that most of the challans were issued in the Sectors 22, 23, 43, 44 and 35. House owners will also charge the fine from April 2. According to MOH all will be charged Rs 10,000 fine who throws waste in public places and water bodies or disposes of the garbage on the road.

People can share the pictures and videos of those who litters waste on road to sanitary staff or on the mobile app- ‘Swacchta’ along with the location. The identity of the person will not be disclosed. Body will verify the pictures and strict action will be taken against the responsible person, he added.
