NEW DELHI: Government of India said that it would create a permanent body through legislation to deal with air pollution and stubble burning in and around the Delhi-NCR region. The Supreme Court of India appointed retired Supreme Court judge Justice Madan B Lokur as the one-man committee to oversee measures being undertaken to control pollution due to stubble burning being practiced in Haryana, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh.

S A Bobde, Chief Justice of India, said that proposal of formulating a law is a welcome step. Tushar Mehta, Solicitor-General, Government of India, said that the draft of the proposed law will be submitted in the apex court within four days. Supreme Court had ordered to deploy National Cadet Corps (NCC), National Service Scheme (NSS) and Bharat Scouts and Guides for assisting the monitoring of stubble burning. The fields of Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi-NCR are to be examined.

This year, the issue of pollution in the capital is of grave importance as the researchers suggest that this can trigger a rise in COVID-19 infections.
