CAG to conduct an audit into BMC’s functioning

MUMBAI: Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, informed the state legislature on Wednesday, that the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will be the subject of a special audit by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

In response to a discussion, he added that the Urban Development Department, Government of Maharashtra will separately conduct a time-bound investigation into the allegations that the serving civic officials of Mumbai have started their own companies and accepting work contracts. He promised to prioritise improving the state of roads in Mumbai and aims for achieving pothole-free roads in three years. According to Fadnavis, the city’s concrete roads will all have duct facilities. He also said that the civic body has all the resources to re-develop its own chawls and run-down apartments.

He told the House that in exchange for the land needed for Dharavi rehabilitation project, the state government has given the railways Rs 800 crore. The state government is in talks with the central government over some issues which are expected to be resolved by August 30. He added that 29,009 BMC sanitation workers would receive residences of their own.
