MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has completed the construction of a one-kilometer long tunnel with a diameter of 40-feet under the Malabar Hill in South Mumbai, which equals to almost 40% of the Coastal Road Project, worth Rs 12,000 crore.
According to Iqbal Singh Chahal, Commissioner, BMC, only 900 meters of tunnels are remaining now and the project will be completed in November 2023. He also informed that this under-sea tunnel project is a ‘first-of-its-kind’ that is being executed in the country. As per BMC’s website, the civic body has envisioned this Mumbai Coastal road project to relieve congestion on existing roads. In the first phase of the project, connectivity between Shamaldas Gandhi Marg, Mumbai to Worli-end of the Bandra-Worli Sealink will be established.
“One of the lanes in this project has been reserved for the development of emergency transport, according to BMC. This project will not only ease traffic congestion on roads but will also lead the city towards sustainable development,” said BMC’S website.
