BMC approves committee for constructing desalination plant

MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has approved the proposal to set-up a five-member committee to examine the process of approving a Detailed Project Report (DPR) and finalising the contractors for construction of a desalination plant to match the drinking water requirement of the city.

The committee will be presided over by BMC Municipal Commissioner along with the member secretary, chief engineer of the water supply projects department, and two additional municipal commissioners and deputy municipal commissioners. According to the statement of Government of Maharashtra, a committee has been proposed under BMC for which the civic body has given the approval on Monday, February 8. The committee will be formed as per the Maharashtra Infrastructure Development Enabling Authority (MahaIDEA) Act, 2018.

The civic body will send the notification to the urban development department for is final approval. Israel based IDE Water Technologies Limited has submitted its approval to the BMC to set-up a desalination plant with capacity of 200 million litre daily (MLD), which can be expanded up to 400 MLD. It will require approximately six to eight hectares of land and the DPR will require around eight months to be completed.
