CHANDIGARH: Sarabjit Kaur Dhillon of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been elected Chandigarh Mayor on Saturday, January 8, defeating Anju Katyal of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) by one vote. Sarabjit Kaur received 14 votes, Katyal 13 and one vote was deemed invalid. The BJP and the AAP both bagged 14 votes in the House.
Sarabjit Kaur Dhillon, a ward 6 councilor, is married to Jagtar Singh Dhillon, a previous councillor who lives in Mani Majra. She completed her studies until the second year of her bachelor’s degree. After her husband’s ward was designated for a female candidate, she entered politics. Dalip Sharma of the BJP defeated Prem Lata of the AAP in the senior deputy mayor election. Out of the 28 votes polled, Sharma received 15 and Lata received 13.
Anup Gupta, a BJP candidate, was elected as a deputy mayor. By a lottery, he was pronounced the winner. Gupta and Ram Chander Yadav of the AAP had previously been tied with 14 votes apiece in the House of 28 members. Both the Congress and the SAD did not vote in this election.
