BJP bags two corporations out of three in Karnataka civic polls

NEW DELHI: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has bagged two out of three municipal corporations which went to polls on Friday, September 3, in Karnataka civic body elections. The elections were held in Belagavi, Hubballi-Dharwad and Kalaburagi municipal corporations and the results were announced on Monday, September 6.

BJP emerged victorious in Belagavi and Hubballi-Dharwad municipal corporations while it finished at close second in Kalaburagi. According to officials of the Karnataka Election Commission, BJP won 35 seats out of total 58 in Belagavi, Congress won 10 seats, and 12 seats were bagged by independent candidates. In Hubballi-Dharwad, BJP won 39 seats out of a total of 82, whereas Congress won 33, and six seats were bagged by independent candidates. In Kalaburagi, elections were held on 55 seats, out of which, Congress won 27; BJP, 23; and one seat by independent.

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai claimed that these elections will be a victory and a ‘sample test’ of the BJP government. He congratulated the BJP ministers, Members of Legislative Assembly and the leaders who worked for the elections in Belagavi. He added that this is a good sign for the government as well as for the state.
