AGARTALA, Tripura: The Government of Tripura to set up a bio-medical waste treatment plant to ensure safe and proper disposal of bio-medical waste (BMW) in Debendra Chandra Nagar, Agartala.

As per Bishu Karmakar, Member Secretary, Tripura State Pollution Control Board (TSPCB), this will be the second such facility in the region after Assam. Currently, the hospital waste is disposed of using the “deep burial” method.

Upon completion of the installation process, bio-medical waste from all the hospitals in the state will be collected, and transported to the plant for safe disposal. Till now, 20 incinerators have been installed in the state hospitals, but they generate a greater amount of liquid discharge.

All the district hospitals will come under the purview of this project and later some of the sub-division hospitals will also join.

Karmakar added that they will set up seven effluent treatment plants to deal with hospital liquid residuals.
