BHUBANESWAR: Acute inflation, power cuts and severe water shortage are just some of the problems faced by the ‘Fani’ affected people of Bhubaneswar city. The super cyclone inflicted loads of material damage on the state of Orissa. It disrupted the day to day lives of people while the authorities are still putting efforts in reinforcing normalcy throughout the state.

Basic amenities like water, electricity and telecom services were disrupted post the landfall caused by the cyclone near Puri on May 3.

The residents of the state have to rely on the water from tube-wells and water tankers as the water supplied by the authorities is reportedly too less for the daily requirements of a small family. The Mundali-Chandaka pipeline, which served as the city’s primary drinking water supply line, suffered  major damages due to the uprooting of trees.

The authorities have initiated actions to restore power supply at the water treatment plants and pumping stations like the water treatment facility of Public Health Engineering Organisation (PHEO) at Mundali. The pumping station at Mundali, which is responsible for 70 per cent of the state’s water, uses two high-end 1,500 kW diesel generators which were struck by the storm.

The spare parts required for the machines’ restoration were not available in Orrisa and hence the state government has arranged helicopter service to repair the station, as per official sources said.
