BENGALURU: N Manjunath Prasad, Commissioner, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), laid down new rules regarding collection of household waste in the city on July 4. The new rule suggested that from September 1, only wet waste will be collected from households daily while dry waste will be collected twice a week. Any kind of mix waste will not be collected by the municipal workers and fines will be imposed on households handing over such waste.
The new rule is imposed as the BBMP is planning to achieve 100 per cent door-to-door waste collection and 90 per cent segregation levels across the city.
Under the new rules, new tenders are likely to be finalised which suggest that contractors can only collect segregated wet waste while rag pickers in the city will be given the responsibility of collecting dry waste twice a week.
BBMP also proposed to increase the fine imposed on violators by five times, apart from increasing the SWM cess to 15 per cent from the existing 3 per cent.
Prasad said, “The increase in fines will be included in the SWM by-laws. The draft has been prepared and will be placed before the committee chaired by the Mayor.”
The corporation hopes to increase its ranking in Swachh Survekshan by imposing new rules and the city will wear a new look added Prasad.
Currently, BBMP is spending nearly Rs 1,000 crores on solid waste management in the city. Gangambike Mallikarjun, Mayor, Bengaluru has urged citizens to cooperate with the BBMP.
