BENGALURU: The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has stopped the renewal process for empaneling vendors due to implemented code of conduct due to upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

As per Solid Waste Management Rules 2016, “Bulk Waste Generator” means and includes buildings occupied by the central government departments or undertakings, state government departments or undertakings, local bodies, public sector undertakings or private companies, hospitals, nursing homes, schools, colleges, universities, other educational institutions, hostels, hotels, commercial establishments, markets, places of worship, stadia and sports complexes etc. having an average waste generation rate exceeding 100 kg per day.

Sources said BBMP is only extending the current order of 45 vendors till the period of code of conduct is applied. “Once it ends, we will start processing all applications that have come before us for renewal,” said senior officials. Waste management experts claimed that civic body is not monitoring work of vendors. “They were picking up mixed waste from bulk generators and dumping it indiscriminately, and were also guilty of following unscientific disposal practices and sometimes even setting the waste on fire,” an expert said.

Earlier in February 2019, the BBMP directed guidelines regarding the work order of empaneled vendors. It is clear in the guidelines that vendors have to collect and discharge the segregated waste to the processing spots conducted by the civic body.
