BENGALURU: Departments under Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and other agencies are working together in coordination with each other to clean and maintain the aesthetics of city roads.
Waste like dry leaves, mixed waste, parts of vehicles involved in accidents, construction debris, and even dust can be seen on side of roads as each agency or civic department passes the responsibility on other. This damages the aesthetic appearance of the city and also obstructs movement of pedestrians and vehicles.
For regular cleaning of major arterial roads and ward roads the civic body has issued a directive makes the department responsible for proper collection and disposal of waste materials found on the roads.
The new circular released by N Manjunath Prasad, BBMP Commissioner, clearly details about the responsibility to clear the discarded materials. The circular issued following the directions of T M Vijay Bhaskar, Chief Secretary — provides clarity, which was earlier lacking on which department is responsible for road waste, said officials.
Six departments under BBMP — Road Infrastructure, Solid Waste Management, Public Health, Forest Cell, OFC cell, and Revenue — will coordinate with each other to ensure the aesthetic maintenance of city’s roads. As per senior civic officials, the issue was discussed during the coordination committee meeting chaired by Bhaskar on April 23.
The responsible departments will also have to coordinate with other agencies like Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom), Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), and the State police for smoother operations.
