The Guwahati government has tabled a bill in the assembly to create the Assam State Capital region Development authority to stimulate fast development of Guwahati and its peripheral areas adjoining the Capital City. “There is an urgent need to establish a regional Development authority for preparing a regional plan both for Guwahati and development of Assam State Capital region”, said Guwahati Development Department Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
While quoting the 70th independence Day speech of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal in which he said Guwahati is important not only for Assam but also for the entire North East, Sarma said the proposed ‘State Capital region’ will boost economic development of Assam and rest of North east. “It has been observed that for the desired growth and development of Assam State Capital region, the existing authorities like Guwahati Metropolitan Development authority, Guwahati Municipal Corporation and other urban authorities will not be sufficient with the scope of their authority and existing guideline,” Sarma stated in the bill.
He also stated that, “It is very much beneficial to establish the Assam State Capital region Development authority in order to achieve the goal of successful implementation of the Assam State Capital Region project within a given time period”.
