Assam Floods: Situation improves, 20,000 people still affected

DISPUR: In the last 24 hours, the Assam flood situation has improved, announced the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) in a bulletin on Tuesday, September 8. The bulletin added that the number of affected people continues to soar at 20,000 people in over 11 districts. However, the death toll remains unchanged at eight. 

The bulletin further stated that on Monday, September 6, the number of people affected was around 43,000 people. The Central Water Commission (CWC) said in an official statement that the Brahmaputra river, along with its tributaries, has been flowing below danger levels in the state. 

Till now, the flood situation in the state has impacted over 370 villages including Chirang, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Kamrup, Morigaon and Nagaon. The Golaghat district has the highest number of affected people i.e. 10,983 people out of a population of 20,007. Chirang and Nagaon districts are running shelter camps housing over 398 people and two relief distribution centres running in Dhemaji district and one in Darrang district.
