Assam expands administrative divisions with four new districts, 81 sub-districts

The Government of Assam has approved the creation of four new districts and 81 sub-districts following the completion of the delimitation process to enhance administrative efficiency.

DISPUR, Assam: The Government of Assam has approved the creation of four new districts and 81 sub-districts with the goal of streamlining administrative processes.

The announcement was made by the Chief Minister of Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma, during a press conference held after the 100th cabinet meeting of his government. The new districts are Biswanath, Bajali, Hojai, and Tamulpur, bringing the total number of districts in Assam to 35.
Sarma said, “We have reconstituted the four new districts, and it is co-terminus with assembly constituencies declared by the Election Commission under delimitation […] the notification for creation of the new districts and sub-districts will be issued soon but will come into effect from January 1, 2024.”

He further added that the Assam cabinet has decided to dissolve the 24 existing civil sub-divisions and create 81 sub-districts, each covering an assembly constituency. All administrative responsibilities will be delegated to additional district commissioners.
