Assam amidst flood havoc: Situation to worsen after Bhutan releases excess dam water

DISPUR, Assam: With continuous rain affecting the whole region of the North East, the flood situation in Assam is likely to worsen after Bhutan has released excess water from the Kurichhu Hydropower Plant reservoir in Kuricchu River. Rivers in lower Assam, the Kaladiya, and Pahumara Rivers are flowing above the danger level due to the release of excess water. A recent report released by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) stated that the current floods have affected 37,535 people in 13 districts across the state. Around 25,275 individuals have been affected in the district of Lakhimpur alone. The state government has issued warnings and instructions over SMS and through TV alerting people about the weather and has set up 25 relief camps in seven districts.
