ARRIA 2021: IIT Madras most innovative for third time in a row

NEW DELHI: Innovation cell of the Ministry of Education, Government of India, released the Atal Ranking of Institutions on Innovation Achievements (ARRIA) 2021 on December 29. Participating institutions are divided into two groups by ARIIA 2021: Technical and Non-Technical.

The Indian Institute of Technology-Madras (IIT-Madras) has been named India’s Most Innovative Educational Institute in the technical category. IIT Madras has won the top spot for the third time in a row. The IITs of Bombay and Delhi were ranked second and third, respectively.

In a virtual event, Subhas Sarkar, Minister of State for Education, Government of India, declared the ranking. He urged higher educational institutions to instill a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship among students and to equip faculty members as innovators, out-of-the-box thinkers, creative problem solvers, entrepreneurs, and job creators while speaking at the virtual ceremony.

Dr Sarkar stated that India has one of the world’s largest higher education institutions in reference to the country’s continuous rise in innovation and start-ups. He believes that higher education institutions have numerous chances to serve as enablers in the Indian innovation and start-up ecosystem.

ARIIA included a category for non-technical higher education institutions for the first time. Centrally-funded institutions, state-funded universities, state-funded autonomous institutions, private/deemed universities, and private institutions are the other five groups.

In the ‘University & Deemed to be University (Government & Government Aided) (Technical)’ category, Punjab University and Delhi Technical University came out on top. Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, Khordha and Chitkara University took first and second place in the University & Deemed to be University (Private or Self-Financed Universities) (Technical) category, respectively.

College of Engineering, Pune, and PSG College of Technology won the ‘Colleges/Institutes (Government & Government aided) (Technical)’ honours. The top central universities in the category of ‘non-technical institutions’ were the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) in Delhi and the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Kozhikode.
