AMARAVATI: The students of National Institute of Technology (NIT), Andhra Pradesh, have developed a ‘Wi-Fi mounted microcontroller’ which can integrate sensors to conduct smart rainwater harvesting. The newly developed method can help in the process of efficient storage of water, will also automate the process and tackle water-borne diseases.

The students from Team LinkLer have also won the prestigious, ‘India Innovation Challenge Design Contest 2019 (IICDC), which was conducted by United States of America (USA)-based Texas Instruments and Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India. The innovation is aimed to address the issue of water storage in Indian cities with the help of concepts such as Internet of Things and Machine Learning. It develops an end-to-end software stack which provides with an easy interface to control and manage in-house water resources.

Some of the unique features of the model include processing autonomous control, data analytics, web application coverage, surplus storage feature and machine learning and API integration. Dr Sri Phani Krishna Karri, team mentor and Assistant Professor, NIT, Andhra Pradesh, said that the system is customizable depending on the water requirements of a household or entity and the students are still in the process of commercialising the product after the approval of the patent.

The team is now undergoing ‘NSRCEL Technical program’ of the Indian Institute of Management – Bangalore to take the product to the market as the NSRCEL programme extends support for incubation, design and product launch.
