AMRITSAR, Punjab: A meeting was held in the Amritsar Municipal Corporation where the officials discussed the ‘Green Action Plan’ that has been formulated to increase the green cover in the city. The meeting was held to frame an outline to achieve the targets assigned by the Department of Local Governments to the corporation.
Harpreet Singh, Commissioner, Amritsar Municipal Corporation, informed that the plan prepared by the local body follows the Urban Greening and Tree Plantation Strategy Guidelines (2023) published by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA).
Based on these guidelines, the Department of Local Government has assigned targets for all local bodies in the corporation towns. The list of targets includes planting at least 35,000 saplings and creating green walls and dense urban forest areas.
To meet these targets, the ‘Green Action Plan’ was framed. It will help set milestones, implement strategies, and monitor progress. To monitor the progress of the urban local body, an app, Hara Punjab, was developed by the Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Company.
Commissioner Singh directed the various department officials to appoint one nodal officer in their department to monitor the plantation and subsequent management. He will take daily feedback. Every two months, a meeting will be held to check the status of geotagging for measuring the growth of green cover will be discussed.
