Ahmedabad: After moving to better manage the implementation of traffic rules, the civic body has taken up several initiatives to remove encroachment on roads. For the uniformity of roads, it has set up a Road Planning and Design Cell. This cell will look into the matter of traffic congestion on each road that falls under the jurisdiction of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). The cell will be using Geographic Information System (GIS) to prepare a report.
According to AMC officials, the cell is the need of the hour and was being discussed for a while.
“The cell will prepare a data bank of the roads in the city and will also have records of the movement of traffic on those stretches, the width of the pedestrian lanes, the width of the carriageway and even the details about the central verge,” said a senior official.
The officials added that not just road engineering, but the cell will also do mapping of underground network systems such as water and drainage lines.
It will also be responsible for preparing estimates along with samples of the material to be used in each of the zones. In order to give a specific look to the entire stretch, the cell will prepare a design of the central verge, the traffic signals, and even the traffic islands.
It was also stated that the cell will prepare a standard operating process for all roads in the city.
