ADITYAPUR: Adityapur Municipal Corporation (AMC) faces difficulties in door-to-door garbage collection as drivers of garbage trucks went on strike to protest a delay in salary payment. Thirty-five drivers stopped working in five days which resulted in garbage to pile up in households.

Truck Drivers get their salary on 16th of every month, but this month they have not yet received their payment and therefore in order to mount pressure on the authorities, drivers went on a strike. According to drivers, they will resume duty only after getting their monthly salary.

The residents expressed their resentment at the civic body’s failure to lift garbage from their doorstep even after charging them for the service.

Jitendra Kumar, AMC city manager said that corporation is trying to resolve the issue as soon as possible. “We have told the drivers that their salaries would be paid by the contractor soon and are trying to persuade them to resume work,” added Kumar

There are about 38,000 households in AMC area. The corporation area has a population of 2.5 lakh spread across 35 wards. Every day five truck-loads of municipal waste is generated by people in the area. As per the city manager AMC charged Rs 50-80 per house per month for collecting garbage. “Residents have every right to complain about the disruption in service because they are paying for it,” Kumar added.
