NEW DELHI: An order from Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that all the vehicles of the Government of Delhi will be replaced by electric vehicles (EV) within the next six months. Any department or autonomous body of the Delhi government can hire an EV for the first time with the permission of the Department of Finance.

The Department of Transport will oversee the switch to EVs and all the departments will have to submit the report to the transport department on how the transition of vehicles to EVs is going on, identify the gaps and give some suggestions to complete the target within six months. In August last year, the Delhi government announced their EV policy which will work towards improving the air quality of the Capital and ensure that at least 25 per cent of all vehicles are battery operated by 2024.

The switch to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) was Delhi’s big switch which made Delhi Transport Corporation one of the world’s largest public transport bodies which run on CNG.
