The All India Institute of Local Self-Government (AIILSG) has undertaken a crucial project with the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) of Bareilly, Pithoragarh, and Moradabad. The Project Management Unit (PMU) in Pithoragarh under Pithoragarh Municipal Council and in Bareilly, under the Bareilly Municipal Corporation, has been working for the proper implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 to provide support to the city for managing its municipal solid waste and fulfilling the targets of the mission, such as better performance in the Swachh Survekshan, making the city garbage and open defecation-free. The project focuses on achieving ODF++ (Open Defecation Free) status and enhancing municipal solid waste management under the Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0. AIILSG is the implementation unit for the project and a technical partner for ULBs.
The Project Management Units (PMUs) in Pithoragarh, Bareilly, and Moradabad are working diligently to implement Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0 effectively. Their efforts aim to support these cities in managing municipal solid waste and achieving the mission’s targets, including better performance in the Swachh Survekshan, making the cities garbage-free, and open defecation-free.
The primary objectives of the project include:
Implementation: The PMU under Pithoragarh Municipal Council has been instrumental in educating citizens about source segregation, sanitation, and the harmful effects of plastic through various IEC activities.
Outcomes: Pithoragarh achieved ODF+ certification. Community toilets, public toilets, and urinals are now functional, clean, and well-maintained, benefiting the public significantly.
Implementation: The PMU under Bareilly Municipal Corporation has raised awareness about source segregation, plastic waste hazards, and public hygiene through behaviour change communication (BCC) and interpersonal communication (IPC) activities.
Outcomes: Bareilly achieved a 1 Star City GFC Star Certification for the first time, meeting all infrastructural and cleanliness parameters. Additionally, the city attained ODF++ status certification by ensuring optimal maintenance of public sanitation facilities.
AIILSG has recently taken up the project in Moradabad, focusing on similar objectives to those in Bareilly and Pithoragarh. The PMU is working for the effective implementation of Swachh Bharat Mission 2.0, aiming to support the municipal corporation in managing solid waste and meeting the mission’s goals, including Solid Waste Management, SBM 2.0, Swachh Vayu Survekshan, Pey Jal Survekshan, Swachh Survekshan, AMRUT 2.0, and achieving Garbage Free City (3 Star, 5 Star, 7 Star) status.
