CHANDIGARH, Haryana: The sanitation workers’ strike in Haryana came to an end after 11 days on October 29, as their demands were accepted by the Government of Haryana.
The sanitation workers resumed their duties on the same day. They were demanding the regularisation of services of around 15,000 sanitation workers employed by the municipal bodies in the state.
Due to this strike, activities such as garbage collection had come to a standstill since October 19, when the workers union decided to resume their strike in several districts, including Ambala, Yamunanagar and Karnal.
Representatives of the Municipal Employees Union of Haryana met the representatives of the state government led by Kamal Gupta, Minister for Urban Local Bodies, Government of Haryana, on Saturday, October 29.
The representatives of the workers’ union said that they have reached an agreement with the state government after which the strike ended on the same evening.
While addressing the press, Gupta informed that details of the meeting can be shared only after November 6, as the model code of conduct is operational in the state. The model code of conduct is in place as bypolls are scheduled to take place on November 3, and the results will be out three days later.
