Act against protestors who stall metro services or dump garbage on the roads: HC

NEW DELHI: The Delhi High Court on Thursday suggested strict action against protestors who stall Metro services or dump garbage on the roads, causing public inconvenience and problems for the common man.

“All of them should go to jail,” a bench of acting Chief Justice Gita Mittal and Justice C Hari Shankar said while commenting on such protests. They sought responses from Delhi Metro and the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) on a plea seeking directions to initiate an inquiry into an incident where station managers were allegedly beaten up over a parking issue recently.

The metro services were temporarily halted for a few hours on Delhi Metro’s Blue Line, following a scuffle between DMRC and CISF personnel got into a scuffle over a parking dispute at the Dwarka Sector 21 metro station in southwest Delhi.

The disruption of the services led one Puran Chand Arya to petition the court for punitive action against New Delhi Municipal Council’s contractual sanitation workers who had dumped garbage outside prominent government buildings like the Shastri Bhavan and the Rail Bhavan in Lutyen’s Delhi, demanding regularisation of jobs and better wages.

The court issued a notice to the Centre, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, the Central Industrial Security Force and the police seeking their stand on Arya’s plea.

The bench directed both matters together on the next hearing, July 16.
