NGT: Shut down illegal industries running in Daryaganj

NEW DELHI: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Delhi government and the North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) to shut down illegal industrial units located in residential areas of Daryaganj. The factories operating in residential areas cause air pollution which is extremely harmful for the residents.

The NGT issued the directions post a complaint filed by Mohd Shariq, a resident of Daryaganj seeking action against unauthorised factories, demanding sealing of the factories.

A bench headed by justice Raghuvendra S. Rathore said, “In case units have applied for clearance from the Delhi Pollution Control Committee [DPCC], the same may be reopened, as and when the requisite clearances are given.”

The NGT asked the NDMC to ensure that these factories halt their operations till they obtain a clearance certificate from DPCC.

“The DPCC shall decide on the application so received, for obtaining clearance, expeditiously, in case any application is pending before it, the same shall be looked into and decided within the stipulated time,” the bench said.
