NEW DELHI: The Delhi government on January 2, 2019, cleared four new projects in the city for a better water supply in summers. The decision was taken by Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister and Delhi Jal Board Chairman in a meeting, where he said thatall the four projects should be completed by March-end.
The Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) has identified six locations on the floodplains between Okhla and Wazirabad where water can be safely extracted. Apart from the Yamuna floodplains, the Delhi Jal Board recently identified fresh water pockets in Dwarka, the fresh water pockets will now be developed and it is expected to deliver 22.5 MLD additional water. The work would begin under the third project for installation of bores in areas with high water table and restarting the closed ranney wells and borewells across Delhi.
The CGWB, in a 2016 report, had identified six locations on the Yamuna floodplain between Wazirabad and Okhla with a potential of 383 MLD (million litres per day) water. According to a CGWB report, there are several locations in north Delhi and east Delhi where the water table is higher than 10 metres.
