MADURAI: Madurai Municipal Corporation (MMC) enforced plastic ban in the city on November 10. V Satish Raghavan, City Health Officer said that at least 6000 commercial establishments such as departmental stores,restaurants, marriage halls, retail grocers, and eateries would have to stop using single-use plastic goods.
According to the officials the ban is applicable to manufacturing, storing and selling of plastic goods below 50 microns. First time violators will be issued a warning by sanitary inspector who would be raiding shops randomly in four zones under the corporation. Those who will receive notice for the first time will have to pay a fine of Rs 500 and on multiple violation against ban the fine can go upto Rs 5000, along with license cancellation. Government offices stopped using plastic goods from July 3. Corporation Commissioner S Aneesh Sekhar had been conducting awareness programmes in schools and administering pledge against plastic use since September 15.
