MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) earned a total of Rs 1.1 crore as fine after Maharashtra government banned plastic use in the state. Around 18,601 kg of plastic was collected until September 18.
The government released a notification on March 23 concerning the ban on manufacturing, use, sale or distribution of any disposable plastic and thermocol items. The ban came into effect from June 23.
The civic body’s plastic ban team visited 2.37 lakh shops since June 23, the squad members were divided into 24 teams and targeted mainly on big establishments and multi-national food and beverage joints. 269 owners out of 2.37 lakh refused to pay the fine.
Local residents have not been given any exemptions but BMC hasn’t started levying fines. Nidhi Choudhari, deputy municipal commissioner said “We are spreading awareness and have asked the plastic ban squad to spread the message,”
The civic body also mentioned the concern raised by the citizens regarding the availability of plastic items in a large amount and claims the ban as a success.
