HYDERABAD: South Central Railway has also decided to follow the civic body’s footsteps; to cut down energy consumption. Hyderabad division of SCR has decided to replace railway quarters and adjacent street of railway colonies lights with LED. Steps have been taken after the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) decision to replace conventional streetlights with LED.
Arun Kumar Jain, divisional railway manager (DRM) of Hyderabad said Hyderabad division (SCR) have already replaced 10,044 tube lights, 17,991 bulbs and 2,683 street lights at the railway colonies. Around 4,096 quarters across the division have LED illuminations, he added.
On his recent visit to the city, Union railway minister Piyush Goyal called SCR the first railway zone in the country to have opted for energy conservation with the help of LED lights. He even launched 224 LED lit railway stations and 561 service buildings in Telangana.
This new initiative to replace of conventional streetlights with LED makes Hyderabad the first railway division in the country to save electricity through two lead semiconductor light source. Now, the civic body is saving 55 per cent energy in street lights in April this year with 96 per cent glowing rate as compared to the same month last year with 80 per cent illumination.
A senior GHMC official in the electrical department said, “The Corporation has replaced over four lakh fittings with LED till date, while the project started in July last year. Till April this year, almost 7 crore units worth Rs 48.70 crore have been saved.”
