Ladakh: Amit Shah, Minister for Home Affairs, announced on Monday, August 26, that the central government will create five new districts in the union territory of Ladakh. Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang will be the new districts.
In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), Amit Shah highlighted that the creation of new districts will benefit the people by improving local administration and governance. He wrote, In pursuit of PM Shri @narendramodi Ji’s vision to build a developed and prosperous Ladakh, the MHA has decided to create five new districts in the union territory. The new districts, namely Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang, will take the benefits meant for the people to their doorsteps by bolstering governance in every nook and cranny. The Modi government is committed to creating abundant opportunities for the people of Ladakh.”
With the addition of Zanskar, Drass, Sham, Nubra, and Changthang, the total number of districts in UT will increase to seven.
Currently, there are only two districts in the union territory: Leh and Kargil, both are governed by the autonomous district council.
