11,872 km of roads to be relaid in Tamil Nadu before 2026

CHENNAI, Tamil Nadu: The Department of Municipal Administration in Tamil Nadu, while quoting the announcement made by Chief Minister MK Stalin in the state assembly, informed that 11,872 km of road in the state will be relaid. This will benefit 20 corporations and more than 100 municipalities.

The department informed that 9346 km of roads will be improved under the Tamil Nadu Road Infrastructure Scheme, the Kalaignar Nagarapura Salai Mempattu Thittam Scheme, and the state and central finance commission funds. Another 2526 km of roads will be improved under the special funding of ₹1000 crore to be provided by the Tamil Nadu government. These road improvement projects will be completed by 2026.

Apart from the road projects, the department also informed that the 53 storm water drain projects have been completed at a total cost of ₹145 crore. These stormwaters are situated in Avadi, Tambaram, Mangadu, Kundrathur, and Poonamalle. Additionally, about 57,000 plant saplings have been planted on the 127 acres of land reclaimed from legacy landfills in 41 urban local bodies in the state.

The municipal administration and water supply department is also executing the projects under the Chennai Smart City Scheme. The project is being implemented in 11 municipal corporations in Tamil Nadu at a cost of ₹10,890 crore.
