GANDHINAGAR, Gujarat: The Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation has decided to renovate the drainage network in the city, informed an official on Sunday, keeping in mind the need for organised management of the drainage system in Gujarat’s capital.

430 km long drainage network system stretching from Sector 1 to Sector 30 is an essential portion of Gandhinagar’s infrastructure.

Till now, the Department of Urban Development in the state has been renovating the underground drainage system under the Smart City Project. The responsibility to renovate this system now falls on the shoulders of the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation.

However, keeping in mind the future drainage water extraction needs of the city, the Department of Urban Development will renovate the underground drainage gutter under the Smart City project.

It is being said that this move will empower the local authorities by allowing them to monitor the entire network in Gujarat. Earlier, the Department of Marg Makan and Patanagar Yojana were responsible for the functioning and maintenance of the drainage systems.

The entire renovation exercise will be completed in two phases. Firstly, the drainage system spanning between Sector 15 to 30 will be renovated; the drainage system between Sector 1 to Sector 14 will be renovated separately.

An official stated, “Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation’s approach to revamp the extensive drainage network marks a significant step towards enhancing the city’s overall infrastructure and improving the lives of its residents”.
