NEW DELHI: ‘Waste to wealth’ initiative of civic bodies of Delhi has been adopted as one of the parameters of Swachh Survekshan, which has been given 2 per cent weightage.

Under the concept of waste to wealth, a ‘Waste to wonder’ park has been established by the South Delhi Municipal Corporation (SDMC) at Sarai Kale Khan, in which replicas of seven wonders of the world have been installed. While ‘Bharat Darshan Park’ is built in the Punjabi Bagh area. Additionally, plans to build two other ‘waste to wonder’ parks have been proposed, one in the Karol Bagh area and the other in Nirman Vihar Metro station.

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi in a statement said “Considering the replicas of monuments made by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) using waste materials as the backbone of the 3Rs — reduce, reuse, recycle programme, the Government of India has issued guidelines for every urban body to develop at least one park in its area, for Swachh Survekshan 2023.”

The waste to wealth initiative of Delhi civic bodies is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s concept of ‘Kachre se Kanchan’.

The noble concept of waste to wealth has been added to the list of parameters in the Swachh Survekshan and has been given the weightage of 2 per cent. Any civic body that will establish such ‘waste to wonder’ parks will have to upload photographs of the park in the Swachtam portal with assistance from the GIS module, for which they will be awarded 90 marks.

Unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi officially came into existence on Sunday, May 21, and the IAS officers Ashwani Kumar and Gyanesh Bharati assumed office as the special officer and Commissioner of Municipal Corporation of Delhi, respectively.
