KOLKATA: Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA) has a dead fish on its hands. Question is, ‘what are they doing about it’?
Two months have gone by since a dead fish was found floating in Rabindra Sarobar, an artificial lake handled by KMDA. On Monday, December 13, PTI reported that the development authorities are mulling the option of infusing liquid oxygen into the water body.
Antara Acharya, CEO, KMDA, stated that a committee has been formed constituting experts who are looking into the matter of increasing the oxygen levels in Rabindra Sarobar. Acharya told PTI that a decision will arrive in “due course of time”. She informed that the development body is in talks with firms that specialise in infusing liquid oxygen in the water.
In October 2021, 30 dead fishes were found floating in the lake. Consequently, three water fountains were constructed in the lake to increase the oxygen levels of the lake. Soon, they were removed as the fountains caused an obstruction to the athletes who have just that one lake for rowing activities.
Several inconclusive tests were run to figure out the cause of death and preliminary talks were held with firms to have a conclusive plan. None of which has taken place yet.
