NEW DELHI: Shimla occupied the top spot on the first Sustainable Development Goals Urban Index released by the Government of India on Tuesday, November 23. The index is the result of joint efforts of NITI Aayog – GIZ (German Society for International Cooperation) and BMZ (The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development) under the Indo-German Development Cooperation.
Among the metropolitan cities, Bengaluru and Chennai landed on 11th and 13th positions, respectively while Delhi got 20th position. The list was prepared taking into consideration performance of cities under certain categories such as poverty, health, education, gender equality, affordable and clean energy and others. Rajiv Kumar, Vice Chairperson, NITI Aayog said, “Cities are fast becoming engines of growth. The SDG Urban Index is an innovative product of the partnership and will go a long way in establishing a robust SDG monitoring system in our cities.”
