BJP bags 22 zilla parishad seats in Maharashtra bypolls

MUMBAI: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) bagged 22 out of the total 85 zilla parishad seats in those Maharashtra districts where the election was held. Congress, on the other hand, won 36 out of 144 seats of panchayat samiti in the state, according to the results announced by the State Election Commission.

Bypolls were held across 84 vacant seats among 6 zilla parishads namely Dhule, Nandurbar, Akola, Washim, Nagpur, Palghar and also on 144 seats across 37 panchayat samitis under the jurisdiction of these districts. The voting was held on Tuesday, October 5, and the counting was held on Wednesday.

In panchayat samiti bypoll, Congress won the highest 36 seats out of 144 total, followed by the BJP with 33 and Shiv Sena with 23. Independent candidates won seven, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena with one and other registered parties bagged 26 seats.
