CHENNAI: The Government of Tamil Nadu has come up with an ambitious urban infrastructure scheme named Kalaignar Nagarpura Membattu Thittam (KNMT) worth Rs 1000 crore, in order to fill the gaps in urban infrastructure. Every urban local body (ULB) will conduct detailed ward-wise surveys and will prepare an urban development to analyse the availability of basic infrastructure and possible gaps.
Tamil Nadu in total has 14 corporations, 121 municipalities and 528 town panchayats, where the infrastructure in 11 corporations and 28 towns in managed by AMRUT (Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation). The state government has come up with this scheme mainly to assist the municipalities and town panchayats. The detailed survey conducted by ULBs will examine the availability of water, sanitation, internal roads, streetlights, burial grounds/crematoriums, and other urban community infrastructure.
The guidelines issued for the implementation of the scheme also suggested the construction of community infrastructure such as community halls, markets and modern libraries with computers for students. KNMT in the state is implemented by the Tamil Nadu Urban Finance and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited.
