NEW DELHI: The United States (US) Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) published a new study that concluded that protection offered by Pfizer and Moderna’s vaccine against COVID-19 eventually “wanes off”. The study has started a conversation among health experts on the need for booster shots in the foreseeable future.
Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved booster shots or a third jab of the vaccine for people with weakened immunity. The decision was taken to provide people better protection against COVID-19 and its variants.
While announcing their decision, they had also suggested that those who have received either the Moderna or Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine could take a third dose. In line with the study’s conclusion, several countries such as Israel, Germany and France, have already planned to roll out the booster shots. CDC suggested that those who are ‘immunocompromised’ could take the booster shot to reduce the risk of prolonged illness from COVID-19.
