NEW DELHI: Kailash Gahlot, Minister of Transport, Government of NCT of Delhi, has begun the first week of “Switch Delhi” campaign – an electric vehicle (EV) awareness campaign to make people aware about the benefits of switching to EV. In a tweet, Gahlot has mentioned monetary benefits of following the campaign and switching to a scooter with electric power.

Gahlot said that switching to an electric two-wheeler can save an amount of Rs 22,000 annually as compared to using a petrol scooter, and Rs 20,000 as compared to petrol bike. He added that apart from monetary benefits, there are significant environmental benefits too. An average electric two-wheeler can save close to 1.98 tonnes of carbon emissions over its lifetime as compared to the average petrol two-wheeler. Thus, using an electric two-wheeler is equivalent to planting 11 trees.

Sohinder Gill, Director General, Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV), praised the efforts of the Delhi government and said that it is good to see that Delhi government has come up with an innovative model to spread awareness regarding the use of EVs. It shows that the government is serious about the problem of air pollution, he added.
