BENGALURU: The government of Karnataka has claimed that it will mitigate the garbage problem of the capital in the coming two years. During assembly proceedings on Tuesday, December 8, the state government, in a written reply, said that five waste-to-energy plants will be built in the city for efficient waste management. JC Madhuswamy, Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs, Government of Karnataka, replied to the question of (Member of Legislative Assembly) MLA NA Haris.
Madhuswamy said that out of 5,000 tonnes of waste in the city, almost 4,000 tonnes will be treated in these plants which will convert it into power or Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) for the state. He added that if Karnataka Power Corporation Limited does not buy the power produced by these plants, it will be used by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike. Two of these plants will be setup in Bidadi and Kannahalli to reduce the dependency on landfills. B S Yediyurappa, Chief Minister, Government of Karnataka, has already inaugurated the facility in Bidadi. At present, around 2,800 tonnes of mixed waste is generated daily in Bengaluru and is dumped in landfills which are under scrutiny from Karnataka High Court and National Green Tribunal.
