BHOPAL: In order to ensure the elimination of biomedical waste in compliance with the Waste Disposal Rules-2016, the principal bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) at Delhi ordered the Government of Madhya Pradesh and the Madhya Pradesh Pollution Control Board (MPPCB) to comply with the orders within two months or else a fine of Rs 1 crore would be imposed on them every month.

A petition was filed in the Madhya Pradesh High Court by the Madhya Pradesh Nagrik Upbhokta Manch, alleging that the Waste Disposal Rules-2016 were not upheld in the disposal of hazardous medical waste, which was then transferred to NGT. While delivering the verdict, a divisional bench of Justice S Singh held that at least 25 per cent of biomedical waste had been disposed in Madhya Pradesh without complying with the rules.
