AHEMEDABAD: After the COVID-19 outbreak people started wearing face masks it has led to a sudden spike of medical waste with normal waste in many cities. To curb this problem a third Yellow bin is being introduced on the streets and public places to collect bio medical waste (including masks, gloves and other protective gear), along with green bin for biodegrabale waste collection and blue bin for non-biodegradable waste collection. Currently, more than 500 yellow bins will be placed near police check-posts, urban health centres and municipal and government offices.
Mukesh Ghadhi, Municipal Commissioner, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation said, by April 14 we plan to put these yellow bins along with other blue and green bins.
A senior official said, “the masks will be worn by symptomatic as well as asymptomatic patients. In this case, if these masks are loosely discarded in public domain, especially in dense areas, there may be a public health catastrophe”.
