LUXEMBOURG CITY: Luxembourg will soon become the world’s first country to make public transit completely free of charge. The recently re-appointed prime minister of the small European country, Xavier Bettel announced that the government would be lifting all charges from all trains, trams and buses from early half of next year. The move enables the country to reduce its carbon footprint and also reduce traffic congestion, which is one of the worst in the world. Luxembourg has more than 400,000 commuters travelling in to work from neighboring countries.
As a predecessor to the move, the government has already enabled people under the age of 20 to avail free transportation earlier in 2019. Secondary school students have also been able to ride free shuttles between school and home. Luxembourg has the highest number of cars per person in the European cities.
