TIRUPATI: The Tirupati international airport went solar on July 4, with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) inaugurated a 1 MW solar plant at the Renigunta airport. The solar power plant is expected to meet over 75 per cent of the airport’s daytime electricity demand.
S Sreekumar,
Regional Executive Director, AAI, turned on the plant and said that AAI aims to
ensure complete operation of all airports across South India on solar power
within three years.
The solar power plant has been installed across four acres of land, parallel to
runway and its isolation bay. S Suresh, Director, Renigunta airport said,
“Switching to solar power is a great experience.”
The authorities said that they will redirect the excess power generated from the solar plant to the national grid via net metering, in tune with Andhra Pradesh government’s renewable energy policy.
