As the Cyclone Vayu moving closer to coast of Gujarat, the government has launched a massive evacuation exercise to shift three lakh people living in low lying areas of Saurashtra and Kutch regions.
The state government said “Cyclone Vayu is likely to affect the districts of Kutch, Morbi, Jamnagar, Junagadh, Devbhoomi-Dwarka, Porbandar, Rajkot, Amreli, Bhavnagar and Gir-Somnath.”
Nitin Patel, Deputy Chief Minister said “nearly 2.91 lakh people from around 400 villages of these 10 districts will be provided shelter in government buildings or those owned by various trusts and NGOs.”

The Indian Meteorological Department-Gujarat said the Cyclone Vayu has turned into a very severe storm and will make a landfall between Diu and Veraval.

With indication of Cyclone Vayu to hit the coast of Gujarat on Thursday morning, the state prepares itself to evacuate over 3 lakh people.
The massive cyclone ‘Vayu’ with wind speeds ranging from 110-120 kmph is likely to move nearly northwards and pass by Gujarat coast between Porbandar and Mahuva around Veraval and Diu region.
In a forecast by the Indian Meterological Department (IMD) for June 13, it said that gales gushing at 110-120 kmph may speed upto 130 kmph by early morning of June 13, over north Arabian Sea and Gujarat coast. Further, the storm will decrease gradually. It will probably be hovering at speeds of 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph over north Maharashtra coasts and northern parts of the east central Arabian Sea.
Warnings of heavy rain and high winds on June 13 and 14 in coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch have already been issued by the IMD.
The Gujarat government declared high alert in the state and deployed National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) personnel in the coastal areas of Saurashtra and Kutch on morning of June 11. The government has further advised fishermen against venturing into the sea for the next few days and all the ports have been directed to flag a danger signal.
As per the weather office, storm surge of height of about 1-1.5 meters above the astronomical tides are likely to inundate the low-lying coastal areas of Kutch, Devbhoomi Dwarka, Porbandar, Junagarh, Diu, Gir Somnath, Amreli and Bhavnagar districts at the time of landfall.
