COIMBATORE: The Coimbatore Corporation officials has begun the work of compartmentalising the heap of garbage at Vellore dump yard in order to take precautionary measures against future fire, after a huge breakout of fire was seen in March at the dump yard.
After a huge part of the dump caught fire last month, the officials has said to create as many pathways as possible to compartmentalise the waste that was spread over 90 acres of land area.
By Marc 31, 2019,
the Corporation had created three main pathways at least 15m wide and is in the
process of pushing garbage to form narrower stretches perpendicular to the main
pathways.
The Corporation officials said that the objective behind compartmentalising the
waste was a precautionary measure against future fire – fire that breaks out in
a section of the compartmentalised waste will not spread to the adjacent
compartments and the pathways among waste will provide easy access for vehicles
to reach the place of fire.
In addition to the compartmentalisation work, the Corporation has also planned to fence the waste and to buy drones for having an aerial view of dump yard.
