7 states report over 89% of the new COVID-19 cases

NEW DELHI: Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, said that the current active COVID-19 cases in India are recorded at 1,51,708 which is mainly due to sudden surge of cases in certain states. 16,738 new COVID-19 cases have been recorded on Wednesday, February 24. The ministry added that 89.57 per cent of the new cases are from seven states namely Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh.

Maharashtra has reported the highest number of new COVID-19 cases at 8,807, followed by Kerala (4,106). The government of India has constituted a high-level multidisciplinary committee and has been given the role of analysing the condition of the pandemic in Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Jammu and Kashmir.

The central government has asked the state governments and union territories to take up aggressive measures to break the transmission chain. They are asked to increase the number of tests conducted per day in a focussed manner in the affected districts.
