67,864 hectares of crops destroyed in Andhra due to floods

AMRAVATI: Heavy rains due to a deep depression over Bay of Bengal destroyed 67,864 hectares of crops in Andhra Pradesh. Eight districts have faced major impact of rains- Vishakhapatnam (5,435 hectares), East Godavari (29,362), West Godavari (15,926), Krishna (12,466), Guntur (381 hectares), YSR Kadapa (2,053 hectares), Kurnool (249 hectares) and Srikakulam (1,992 hectares).

6,229 hectares of horticulture crops such as vegetables, bananas, papaya, betel vine, yam, etc, have also been destroyed. The major damaged crops include paddy, pulses, sugarcane, maize, ragi, cotton and tobacco. Around 11 people have lost their lives due to rain- related incidents in the state.

Around 463 boats were destroyed due to rains which include 424 in West Godavari and 39 in Vishakhapatnam. Nearly, 900 kilometers of roads were also damaged across the state.

Telangana is also suffering from a similar condition where heavy rains have destroyed almost six lakh acres of cotton crop. K Chandrasekhar Rao, Chief Minister, Government of Telangana, has asked the centre to release an amount of Rs 1,350 crores for the state.
