KANPUR: Multiple cases, as many as 57 cases, of COVID-19 infections in girls at a child shelter home in Kanpur district of Uttar Pradesh have been found out as of June 21. 5 of these are pregnant and 1 of the five also tested positive for HIV. Brahma Dev Ram Tiwari, Kanpur, District Magistrate, said that the Child Welfare Committees of Agra, Etah, Kannauj, Firozabad and Kanpur, under the POCSO Act, had referred the 5 girls. Initial probe reveals lapse in district administration. The shelter home has a capacity to house only 100 people, but it was informed by sources that it served around 117 girls at one point of time.
The first case came on June 15, following which immediate necessary action was not undertaken by the district administration. 33 cases in the same home were registered on June 17.
As of now, the building has been sealed and the patients are quarantined in different hospitals.
